Ray Richardson

Ray Richardson B.A. A.R.E. is a British Post-war & Contemporary painter who was born in 1964. He was educated at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Goldsmiths’ College School of Art, where he gained a fine art degree with honours. Richardson’s work is held in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and London’s National Portrait Gallery. He went on to paint full-time, although occasionally he did voluntary work with children on projects and murals. Richardson gained a British Council Award in 1989, 1999 and 2002, and then won a Special Commendation in BP Portrait Award at National Portrait Gallery in 1990. Richardson’s paintings depict the iconography of working-class London, such as bull terriers and tough-looking men. Inspired by Edward Hopper and film noir, his compositions have been compared to the cinema of David Lynch and Martin Scorsese.

Richardson has been a regular exhibitor with Compass Gallery and participated in the touring exhibitions, The Force and Form of Memory, 2012, and Still Spaces: The Allotment Project, 2013.
