Alasdair Stephen

Alasdair Stephen is a Scottish artist, who graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2025 with a BA (Hons) in Painting & Printmaking.

He says "I am an artist from Scotland, who primarily works in acrylic and oil paints, as well as occasionally clay sculpture. My work usually centres around my affinity for nature, and my connection to the wild spaces around me. Exploring themes around ecology, and humanities relationship with the natural world. I have a particular likeness for fine detail in my painting process. Cataloguing and investigating the depths of the natural objects that I find. Highlighting the curiosities of the undergrowth that tend to go unnoticed. The insects, fungi, and ‘weeds’. Taking mother nature’s pariahs, and reframing them as isolated portraits. I have found throughout my practice that it can be too easy to become lost focusing on ‘the bigger picture’ when tackling the theme of conservation. The all-encompassing cataclysm of the natural world, as human civilization and industry continues to tighten its grip on what wild space still remains. But I prefer to approach the subject with a more personal approach. Bringing a piece of the spaces I inhabit into a gallery setting. In order to hopefully create a more intimate connection between my paintings and those who view them. To draw them in to study the forms and details of these usually overlooked natural curios. I also have had a long time passion for conceptual design. Observing and dissecting the natural subjects of my paintings in order to compose my own mythologies. Creating characters to tell stories on my behalf. These often take the shape of chimeras. Composite creatures and environments formed by combining aspects of many of the forms, and objects I paint".
