Born in 1946, in Aberdeen, James Castle studied at Ealing School of Art, Winchester School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. He has exhibited throughout the UK in solo and mixed exhibitions, and has had 2 solo exhibitions at Compass Gallery, Glasgow, in 1993 and 2007. He exhibits regularly with the RSA in Edinburgh. His work is held in public collections in Scotland and England, and in private collections throughout Europe and the USA. James was elected an Associate Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2005, and in 2008 was elected as a Royal Scottish Academician.
As well as exhibiting throughout the United Kingdom, James has curated exhibitions of sculpture, most notably at Gloucester Cathedral and Malmesbury Abbey. He was also a senior lecturer in Sculpture and Fine Art at the University of Gloucestershire.
The majority of his sculpture is carved mainly from limewood, and then painted. Like many other sculptors, drawing is an integral and reflexive part of his practice.
