Philip Braham RSA

Born in Glasgow in 1959, Braham studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee D.A (Painting) from 1976-80, and the following year graduated with a Postgraduate in Painting (Special Commendation) from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the Hague, Holland.

Phil first came to prominence in the 1980's with the rise of figurative painting in Scotland. He has had many solo exhibitions throughout his career and has participated in numerous mixed shows both nationally and internationally. He has exhibited with Compass Gallery since he graduated, with 2 solo exhibitions in 1993 and 1999. He is the recipient of many awards including the RSA Guthrie Award and RSA Morton Award. He was elected to the RSA in 2021 and has been a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Art Practice at the University of Dundee until his retirement in 2025.

Phil’s paintings are informed by the Northern European engagement with landscape as a metaphor for the human condition.
