The career of the artist Jack Knox spans over 5 decades. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and the Andre L'Hote Atelier, Paris, winning a string of prizes including the Carnegie Trust Travelling Scholarship, the Guthrie Award, several RSA awards, and the Scottish Arts Council Award. Knox, a 'Glasgow Boy' of the 1950's era, became a Senior Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee where he taught for 16 years. He became Head of Painting at Glasgow School of Art in 1981 till 1992. Knox was an excellent example of an accomplished and committed artist who managed to bridge the proverbial 'generation gap' at each successful stage of his career. He was able to do this through his continuing interest and enthusiastic involvement of the interests and affairs of his colleagues, teaching staff and contemporaries, both at home and in the wider field of the changing Art Movement in Europe and America. He has inspired and influenced generations of new artists graduating under his watch, many of whom now have successful careers with international status. Amongst them, to name a few, are Jenny Saville, Alison Watt, Steven Campbell, Adrian Wiszniewski, Ken Currie and Stephen Conroy. Knox has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout the UK and further afield. His group exhibitions include Chicago, Warsaw, Brussels, New York, Dusseldorf, Vienna, Sao Paulo and Sarajevo. A regular exhibitor in The New Charing Cross Gallery, Compass Gallery and Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow, since their inception. Jack had several solo exhibitions, and we continue to represent his estate. Works in public collections include Aberdeen; Dundee; Edinburgh; Kirkcaldy; Glasgow; Manchester; Sao Paulo, Brazil; L.A. and many others. There have been relatively few opportunities to see specialised sculpture exhibitions, especially of small-scale works. Our own interest in presenting such a show goes back to at least the early 1970\u2019s when we had planned an exhibition of maquettes in Compass Gallery to complement an Arts Council Tour of British Sculpture. Compass has a long history of including sculpture in its exhibition programme showing works by New Generation artists and bringing major well known names such as Sir Anthony Caro, Dame Elizabeth Frink, Anne Christopher, Anna Maria Pacheco, Belinda Rush Jansen, James Castle and many others who had not yet exhibited in Scotland. This online selection highlights a range of ideas and styles in bronze, wood, stone and other materials on an easily accommodated domestic scale.\r\n\r\nPerhaps it will arouse a new interest for those enthusiastic art lovers who find their restricted wall space an ever frustrating problem. Most works are for sale, others we show for your interest. We have included a tiny sprinkling of several past and present New Generation artists, many of whom went on to become tutors in our art schools, alongside selected small-scale works by influential artists and tutors such as Fergusson, McCance, and Vincent Butler. We can\u2019t include them all... there are numerous more who have shown over the years with pride. We are delighted to announce that this wonderful solo exhibition by John Inglis which took place in Compass Gallery and was halted by lockdown, has now opened in The Lillie Gallery, Milngavie. It is exciting that the delay means it now hangs alongside their Joan Eardley Centenary Show along with ceramics by Eardley\u2019s niece Anne Morrison. John has completed several new works this year which have been added in.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u201cPart of this exhibition includes work shown in a Compass Gallery, Glasgow, solo exhibition in 2020, just as that period\u2019s \u2018lockdown\u2019 was making itself felt. And, it is due to the support and enthusiasm of Jill Gerber of the Compass that this present show has happened. Jill acted as a link with the Lillie and recommended that the Lillie Gallery goers might be interested in seeing the show on their doorstep. In the end, the exhibition, here, is a mixture of some of the Compass paintings and a selection of new pieces.\r\n\r\nOne entire room (Gallery 3) is devoted to a group of works taken from a brief visit to Cromarty in September 2020 (in between \u2018lockdowns\u2019). In addition, in the display case are some examples of studies made both in Cromarty and thereafter.
