In March 2020, we created an exhibition for Clydebank Museums, presenting a selection from amongst the many talented contemporary women artists who have had solo exhibitions in Compass Gallery over the past 50 years.

Due to lockdown, the exhibition could not open formally. Therefore, to give it the showcase it deserves and to our audience the opportunity to see it, we have now recreated it on the walls of Compass Gallery and are sharing it online for you to enjoy.

This exhibition focuses on painters but there are hundreds more practicing artists who have shown in Compass Gallery across the disciplines of drawing, sculpture, printmaking and other media.

Today contemporary women artists are thriving, with increasing opportunities for them to express themselves and exhibit their work. However, they often have to juggle balancing the complexities of life whilst seeking out that precious time needed to gather inspiration and find time to create.

Prior to the 1960’s, women artists had little opportunity to show their work. In 1969 Compass Gallery was founded to promote the work of contemporary living artists, giving many women their first opportunity exhibit solo. Often their varied, sometimes life-challenging experiences and their strong emotional thoughts enrich their images.
The commitment of all the artists in this show is unquestionable. Some now have very established careers, some are just beginning their journey. All have been generous enough to share their individual and private thoughts with us, the onlookers, for our enjoyment.

All works are for sale, the proceeds of which go directly towards supporting the artists and Compass Gallery.
